FINANCIAL • 20 MIN READ

Financial statements tell the story of your business. Learn how to read and interpret these critical documents.

The Three Core Financial Statements

Balance Sheet

The balance sheet provides a snapshot of your business's financial position at a specific point in time. It shows what you own (assets), what you owe (liabilities), and the owner's equity.

Key Components:

  • Assets: Cash, accounts receivable, inventory, equipment, property
  • Liabilities: Accounts payable, loans, credit card debt, accrued expenses
  • Equity: Owner's investment, retained earnings, current year profit/loss

Formula: Assets = Liabilities + Equity

Income Statement (P&L)

The income statement shows your business's profitability over a period of time. It details all revenue earned and expenses incurred, resulting in net profit or loss.

Key Components:

  • Revenue: Sales, service income, other income sources
  • Cost of Goods Sold: Direct costs to produce products/services
  • Operating Expenses: Rent, utilities, salaries, marketing, insurance
  • Net Income: What's left after all expenses are deducted

Formula: Revenue - Expenses = Net Income

Cash Flow Statement

The cash flow statement tracks the movement of cash in and out of your business. It shows how well you manage cash to meet obligations and fund operations.

Key Components:

  • Operating Activities: Cash from day-to-day business operations
  • Investing Activities: Cash used for investments in assets
  • Financing Activities: Cash from loans, investments, or dividends

Shows: Beginning Cash + Cash In - Cash Out = Ending Cash

How to Use Financial Statements

Monitor Business Performance

Compare current statements to previous periods to identify trends, spot problems early, and measure growth.

Make Informed Decisions

Use financial data to decide when to hire, invest in equipment, or expand operations. Numbers don't lie—let them guide your strategy.

Secure Financing

Lenders and investors require financial statements to evaluate your business. Well-maintained statements increase your chances of securing loans or investment.
